Here's one for you experts.
8600 with a cresendo G3 300 upgrade running 9.1 with all the updates.
128 megs of ram.
Added fujitsu 4 gig internal drive.
Microscan scsi scanner
Epson Stylus photo printer
external cr-r drive
zip drive also scsi.
All installed software and drivers are the latest I can find.
The problem is all of a sudden it won't shut down. The drives disapear off of the desktop and it freezes. It works fine while running with no crashes, is also much faster than 8.6 and all is fine till you shut down. this also happens with extensions off. Restart seems to work MOST of the time.
Any thoughts? I've tried all I can think of short of reinstalling everything
The drives have been run through Systemworks, Techtool and Diskwarrior with nothing major found. Desktop rebuilt. :-(

Try zapping the PRAM. Command-Option-p-r during startup.
If that does not fix it, remove a peripheral and use the computer through a few sessions. See if the problem goes away. Try it with each peripheral, until you hit the one causing the problem.

Yea, I did the pram. No change. I neglected to mention that a friend is also having this problem on a brand new 533 with a scsi card and keyspan serial card. Seems strange to start all of a sudden with no added hardware since installing 9.1 and all has worked well up to now...
Thanks,

if you try booting up with no extensions, and then shut down, does it still work?

Things I would try (no particular order):
1) Rearrange your SCSI chain. See if error occurs with *NO* peripherals attached. If not, slowly add them back on until you find an order that works for you.
2) Remove your G3 upgrade and see if problem persists.
3) Remove the added 4G HD and see if problem still occurs. If Mac OS is installed on 4G, try moving to original internal drive instead.
4) Be sure that you have the latest firmware update from Apple. May not be shown via Software Update - check out Apple's support site.
5) If you have cleaned out your system folder by removing folders and extensions you don't think you need, put them back or reinstall. There are certain files in your system folder that may not seem to pertain to your mac, but they are sometimes necessary for stability (the "Multiprocessing" folder is a key example).
Good luck!

edit: Something I forgot......see if things shut down properly when you boot from the OS 9.1 CD (hold down "C" during startup)
Also make sure you have the latest updates and drivers not just from Apple but also from your processor upgrade manufacturer (sonnet, i believe - www.sonnettech.com ). Many had to post 9.1 updates to these files.
