clearing the RAM?

some people who don't use macs tell me that sometimes i have to 'clear' the memory by holding down some key when the system boots
is this true and if so why and how?
i thought that the memory clears itself when i restart the machine

Yeah, occasionally problems can occur if you don't "flash the P-RAM" which involves holding a key combination at startup. I've had several macs over the years and have never had to do it. read in the apple help file by pushing "help" on your keyboard to get the key combination... I think it is something like apple+p+r on startup and then you stop after you hear the second chime.

Option + Apple + "P" + "R"
And I allow it to restart and chime 3 times.
