I searched for this quandry but found only questions relating to an iMac drive in an old Performa- so can an iMac hard drive (spec'd as a 4gb IDE drive" go in a beige powermac G3 (which originally came with a 4gb EIDE drive). In other words, what is the difference between IDE and EIDE?
Thanks-
Val

It'll work fine. They are both EIDE drives. 'IDE' drives first came out in the early 90's (?). The difference between IDE and EIDE is...well, EIDE is newer, likely faster, etc. If you did happen to have an IDE drive, it would be backwards compatible with the newer EIDE computers.

The Wintel crowd has no idea what's going on, let alone the SCSI-bred mac people.
I'm personally reassured now that my computer is much less obsolete than it was about an hour ago.

Hey Val,
You should be fine as everyone here has assured you . I think the one caveat you might have is if you are planning to run OSX. It has to be in the first 8GB partition of the drive (I believe it is 8GB). I know this won't applty to you because it is a 4GB drive, but for anyone else reading this thinking of doing it, as well. We did a similar thing, we updated one of my wife's iMac's and moved the 10GB drive into a beige G3. for the life of me, I couldn't get the computer to run X, and after some digging, found out about that limitation (X will work, but again, it needs to be installed on a certain part of the drive).
good luck and have fun!
