Activision using 'new studios' to 'reinvent' Guitar Hero -Destructoid
Considering the franchise's sliding sales, it wasn't shocking to learn that Activision had disbanded its Guitar Hero business unit and decided to not release a new title this year. The fate of the series hung in the balance, and the publisher was quiet on any solid plans going forward.
But thanks to Activision Blizzard CEO (and movie star) Bobby Kotick, we can rest easy knowing that a new Guitar Hero is on its way
Did they end this game series or not? It hasn't even been a year since it's reported demise and they're already trying to revive it. WTF
Two More Shots of Modern Warfare 3 Emerge
Battlefield Alpha begins, releases "new" mulitplayer trailer, Alpha footage leaks everywhere.
Robert "Shorn Scrotum" Bowling releases two screenshots of single player that match the trailer shown at E3.
The epitome of bringing a knife to a gun fight (Which supposedly is his preferred method of playing CoD).

Seriously, though, you are right. I thought they killed it!

I think their problem is they don't know how to handle an IP that doesn't have a yearly cycle. They went so far as to stopping producing DLC as soon their current crop ran out in February. So they can't support the game, but they're looking into a sequel already?
Asshats.

Am I that transparent!?!
Seriously, the cheerleader game gets a total 'meh' from me. I'm very excited for Dead Island on the other hand.
Newbury Comics had a used copy of Dead Rising for like 6 bucks, worth it?

Monday News
Bulletstorm was great, didn't sell, says Epic | Joystiq
Speaking with Kotaku, Epic President Mike Capps lamented Bulletstorm's financial performance, saying that the title "didn't make money for us." However, despite its relatively poor sales, Capps implies that the game was still worth making
This pretty much sums up new IP in the industry, right?

Too bad the NPD sucks now.
Activision had Plans for High-Definition GoldenEye All Along
My speculation is that splitting the release also stoked demand on the high definition consoles, and maximizes sales on the Wii without making the product look like an oh-by-the-way port.
Nailed it. Too bad the Wii is irrelevant as a software mover now.
Digital Distribution: Publishers are poisoning the well -Destructoid
Samsung-funded study finds 3D video causes extra eye strain, fatigue
The participants responded that they experienced more eye strain and fatigue from the video with different vergence and focal distances, a feature of 3D that has long been supposed to cause eye strain. The self-reported differences between 3D and 2D were not drastic, but they were significant.
Surprise!

But also, I'm fairly convinced that Bulletstorm "failed" because people are done with the jokesy/juvenile FPS genre for a while. Everyone is all about CoD or Battlefield.

By all accounts, it was a more modern Duke Nukem.
I will say however, if the people who bought and enjoyed it are to be believed, the demo was atrocious. I certainly got nothing out of it. But even the concept of a Tony Hawk of FPS games didn't stoke the fires of interest either.

I didn't bother with it, because I got the impression that it was all about killing enemies in different (maybe juvenile) ways. The problem I saw with that is that I would end up killing enemies in a half a dozen different ways and forget the other 30 ways of killing enemies...
I also assumed it wouldn't have much of a story.

So, I forgot to impart a wonderful tidbit of knowledge about online passes I gleaned this weekend.
As some of you may know, I have two XBOXs, and during the heatwave I decided I'd do a small amount of gaming in the bedroom where it's air conditioned. I grabbed Homefront, popped it in, and booted it up.
Immediately I'm greeted with "No Online Pass found". I skip past it and I find my level is intact, so I jump into multiplayer anyway. After a couple of games I then notice I'm not gaining experience.
That's right : The online pass isn't tied to my gamertag – it's DLC. Instead of storing it server side I have to remember to take it with me if I want to gain experience on a different console than the one I registered on. How terrible is that?

While I see the problem, I knew it was DLC, and that's the problem with DLC and games. You got to take them along with you.
I know I haven't used my second Xbox at home for much. I'll probably sell it when the new Xbox comes out in 2013, unless my first Xbox dies again (knock on wood).

Canadians now have the Xbox Rewards program. I got an email a few days ago and registered.
Which brings up another subject. I haven't seen any deals on Xbox Live for a 12 month (or any number of months) renewal of Xbox Live. Around this time last year, they seemed to be plastering us with deals! Ho well, mine doesn't run out till sometime in Q1 2012.

You won't eventually upgrade to two next-gen XBoxes?
My 360 has increasingly become my media box. We rent movies from Zune, watch Netflix and DVDs, tune in to ESPN3, and use Last.fm when people come over to the house. I played Black Ops the other day for a few minutes and a few games of MLB Bobblehead Pros (Americanized Power Pro Baseball, which is the most enjoyable baseball game to play, IMHO), but that's all of the gaming I've done on it.

Not unless they're prone to breakdowns. The only reason I bought the second Xbox 360 was to hold me over while my first one was repaired. And it was a good idea as I had to send the replacement I received, back to MS, for another replacement. I couldn't bear being without an Xbox 360 to game, now.

My Mac Pro and iPod are my media box. And as for movies, I go to the movie theatre every Saturday, and I have every movie channel that my cable provider provides.

I'm not sure how to access it on 360. I know PS3's is pretty easy to find.

Summer is ridiculously busy for me. Nearly all of my gaming has been done on PS3, however (Minecraft notwithstanding).
I'm guessing things might change around the release of MW3/BF3.

On an obscure, non-interesting note, I think I may have let one of those amazon $20 promotions I got from my shopping spree in the late fall/early winter expire without using them.

I think it depends on the game. Amazon send you an email after each purchase goes through and they'll usually have a date hidden on there somewhere. Unfortunately it doesn't say on the web invoices if you gained a promotion (though I was able to see some of the ones I used).

Since Jawbone doesn't know where it is...
It's under My Xbox, Manage account, Download History. and yes I believe this is stored on the Server. A hitch with this, though, is I believe Dlc is licensed to a specific Xbox. You have to transfer that license online on a Mac or PC at Live. That's another reason I don't use the second Xbox much - you can't transfer Dlc back and forth or have it on 2 xboxes, I believe.

Wednesday News
Dragon Age II pulled from Steam as Legacy DLC launches | VG247
While Dragon Age: Origins is still available through Valve’s service, Destructoid noticed that sequel Dragon Age II is suddenly and mysteriously absent.
The timing of the game’s removal as its first bit of DLC launches is probably not coincidental; it’s become obvious that Steam and EA have had a falling out over how the latter chooses to deliver content to players.
Legacy is offered in-game in the PC version of Dragon Age II, meaning players can purchase it without passing through Steam’s checkout – apparently a violation of its recently introduced, free-to-play friendly terms and services, not to mention denying it a piece of the action.
Begun, this cold war has.
Duke Nukem Forever Lives On to Parody Call of Duty, Team Fortress & More This Fall
Working on DLC for a failure of a game like this must feel very weird. It'll be DOA.
The New ESPN on Xbox 360 Is the Only Way I Want to Watch Sports Now
You officially have a reason to watch ESPN on your Xbox 360 come this fall—ESPN 2.0 is pretty goddamn awesome. Watch multiple games in HD. Pause one while keeping the other going. Stats! So many stats. And oh lord, the mini-guide with live thumbs and scores.
God damn, right, stats. Considering widescreen is the most valuable aspect ratio for most sports they can line the top and bottom with stats for all I care.
Battlefield 3 pre-orders 10x Bad Company 2 - Battlefield 3 for Xbox 360 News
It's almost enough to make me waffle on MW3 predictions. Facts are facts. PC gamers weren't entirely fond of the Bad Company series, and they're not fond of Modern Warfare thanks to the dedicated servers fiasco of '09. Logically, EA has taken advantage of the situation by pulling BF3 from pre-order on Steam.
But seriously, all that alpha footage that's leaking can only be helping. It's noteworthy that outside of the first day or so, DICE and EA stopped pulling youtube vids. That's because unless your game is a disaster, any publicity is good publicity. And speaking of publicity, it was a two years ago today the famed AC-130 trailer for Modern warfare 2 debuted. Hello? Infinity Ward? Are you there? I've noticed Black Ops' multi screen mentioning the MW3 multi will be playable at their event in September, and I honestly wonder if Robert "Balls smooth as eggs" Bowling and the rest of IW are really going to try to stall revealing any multi until then (expect Spec Ops filler in the meantime). Not heartening.

There's a new HumbleBundle, and this one looks pretty good. Crayon Physics Deluxe, Cogs, VVVVVV, Hammerfights, And Yet It Moves. The Humble Indie Bundle #3 (pay what you want for five awesome indie games)
I already own And Yet It Moves and I love it. I own Cogs too, but haven't got to it yet.
Crayon Physics looks like voodoo magic instead of an actual video game. Hammerfight has an interesting physic-engine-powered control scheme that looks interesting. VVVVVV isn't my kind of game but I keep hearing great things about it.

3DS price drops to $170 on August 12 | Joystiq
Well that's one way to jump start sluggish sales.
Nintendo has just announced that the price on the 3DS will drop to $169.99 stateside on August 12. That's down from $250 currently, which we don't have to tell you is a pretty shocking drop, considering the tech involved and how recently the system was released.
Unheard of? I'm flabbergasted, but between the economy and the less than awesome tech, these guys do have another Virtual Boy brewing.
The odd casualty in this? The still not released Vita's previously impressive debut price.
Current 3DS owners eligible for free games | Joystiq
3DS ambassadorial duties mostly involve playing a bunch of free games. The status grants you access to 10 free NES Virtual Console games on September 1 before their general release (these include The Legend of Zelda, Balloon Fight and Ice Climber), along with 10 more Game Boy Advance Virtual Console games by the end of 2011. The GBA games -- like Yoshi's Island, Super Mario Advance 3, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Metroid Fusion, WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgames and Mario vs. Donkey Kong -- will not be available to anyone else. Is all that enough to ameliorate early buyer's remorse?
Reminds me of the original iPhone rebate. Well done, Nintendo.
PS3 Sales Down, but the PS2 Lives On!
The release covers the three months between April and June this year. In that time, the PS3 sold 1.8 million units (down from 2.4 million last year), the PSP sold 1.8 million (up from 1.2 million) and the old warhorse, the PS2, sold 1.4 million, only slightly down from the 1.6 million this time last year.
The PS2 will not die!
Pokémon Director Sad That E3 Was All About Killing | Siliconera
“This year, FPS war games were trend!! A lot of splatter scenes!! Blood spread everywhere. Shooting a lot, killing a lot,” he wrote.
Apparently this guy hasn't been to a show since 2007. Also, he's a bit of a hypocrite (maybe if I only caused OpFor to faint it'd be ok?)

Kind of blown away by the 3DS price drop. I expected one, but certainly not this soon. Nintendo is clearly in a state of near-panic.
As for the Vita getting the shaft in this deal, I'm not 100% sure that's the case (though I wouldn't rule it out). The 3DS' main problem has not been the price -- it's been the lack of quality titles. Actually, it's been the lack of titles at all.
If the Vita delivers all the quality titles that have been shown, then I don't see this hitting them that hard.

Yeah, I don't see too many crossovers regarding those handheld systems, but there might be a few people who take a pause and wait for a price drop thanks to the comparison.
Still wondering what the future holds for the PS3's MSRP. Shipments were down over half a mil compared to last year.

Sales have hit a bit of a wall, but a $199 or even $249 price point would do wonders.
All the price drop rumors pointed to August. We'll (hopefully) see soon.

I think $250 would be... mediocre. The Wii left that price point behind and the 360 has been sitting at $199 for a while now.
Also, I just read Nintendo will be taking a loss at the new 3DS price point. So, that really says something.

Unheard of? I'm flabbergasted, but between the economy and the less than awesome tech, these guys do have another Virtual Boy brewing.
The odd casualty in this? The still not released Vita's previously impressive debut price.
We all knew this was coming but...now? Absolutly not, I thought for sure closer to the holiday rush we would see a price drop to $189/$199. I'm shocked, but its the right move.

Then again, they probably don't even know they can get their streams in HD if they had a different box.
