This is politics. It doesn’t need to be a real flub. All it needs are the optics of one.
Edit: to clarify those optics, Obama is a member of the elite class. By behaving in a way reminiscent of a Grey Poupon commercial, he evoked this class, not the class the burger came from.

Yeah, but who actually bought that then, let alone now? Also, that's the ****ing point here: NYT is trying to manufacture an Obama flub for the sake of both-sidesing a headline.
Here's the best part – I can give you an apple-to-apples fake flub between Obama and Trump: Obama using dijon on a burger and Trump liking steaks well-done and with ketchup.
This is the point of the article, which is why I object to it being characterized as illiberal. She’s smacking Trump... like hard.
The alternate headline may have been written with the intent to subvert this, but as I said, I think it’s more likely the result of a hack who thought they could slap a band-aid on the structural problems of the article.

Considering you were complaining pretty hard about inaccurate headlines re: Trump tweets a few months ago, your mostly indifference to this is... puzzling.
Boston Globe gets bomb threats after criticizing Trumps war on the media. Boston Globe and NYT are owned by same company. Papers from across the nation weighed in, both conservative and liberal.
NYT seems to have bought some GOP disinformation on Rosenstein hook, line, and sinker. Not sure how it got to publish when Wapo was able to get proper context on it within an hour or two.
Someone was trying to goad Trump into firing Rosenstein and the NYT recklessly bought it.
Breaking News: Paul Manafort, an ex-Trump aide, discussed internal polling data during the 2016 race with a man tied to Russian intelligence, prosecutors say
"ex-Trump aide" is an interesting way to frame "Trump Campaign Manager"
