Given a Power Mac 8100 with a 17" monitor. The OS can only display 640x480 resolution, and will not let that change. Tried PRAM reset, removing the Monitors Preferences file... did not work. Any other ideas?

The 8100 has at least 2MBs of VRAM, which is enough to drive a 17" monitor at something higher than 640x480. What brand of monitor is it? I imagine that if it's a VGA monitor, the problem may be the Mac video -> VGA adapter you're using. Have you hooked up a different monitor?

You havce to drop the colors to thousands or even 256 colors to get more resolution.

No you don't. The OP needs a sync adapter which will force the computer to use a different monitor- there may have been one which came with this setup. It will have DIP switches on it that allow the user to reconfigure the resolution for the display. It's going to be impossible to buy one new at this point but there are probably a bunch of them languishing in drawers around the world.
